Denny
Shaffer began his karate training in Nashville Tennessee in April of
1964.In 1966 he opened his dojo and founded The Karate School Of
Nashville. His first style was Kung Fu. The highlight of
Denny`s Kung Fu experience was training with and being trained by Bruce
Lee. Denny and Bruce became friends and corresponded until Denny's
decision to switch to Isshin-Ryu. A copy of one of Bruce Lee's
letters hangs in Denny`s dojo. Denny`s decision to change styles came after meeting Harold Long at a tournament. It was the right decision. Over the years Denny has trained and produced four additional Hall of Fame Members (Phillip McElroy, Jim McDonald, Butch Hill, and David Gabbard) as well as numerous 6th Dan and above Masters, national champions, I.I.K.A. board members, and over 100 black belts. |
Highlights of Denny`s career have been winning the First International Isshin-Ryu grand champion, as well as 25 other state and regional titles. He was an original board member of the I.I.K.A. and served as Vice President. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Isshin-Ryu Hall of Fame and was for three years the Emcee of the HOF annual awards banquet.
Denny presently lives in Anderson South Carolina. He is retired after selling his chain of fitness centers. He owns and operates Shaffer's Red Dragon School of Karate. His personal philosophy is: "Teaching Karate is a privilege. It is an opportunity for positive input into the lives of others, and therefore a moral obligation to lead by example."
